Torrevieja Travel Guide

If you'd like to experience the beauty of Spain's Costa Blanca, please consider visiting lovely Torrevieja, approximately 50 km (31 miles) from the city of Alicante. The airport in Alicante offers convenient access to the region. The Torrevieja area is a popular beachfront vacation destination, both for Spaniards and English speakers. Torrevieja is a sunny retreat from daily life, and an ideal vacation getaway all year round.

The city of Torrevieja, literally "old tower", is historically known for its role in the salt trade. Torrevieja is surrounded by two large salt lakes, Torrevieja and La Mata. These two lakes produce more than half a million tons of salt annually. During your visit to Torrevieja, you should stop in at the Museum of Sea and Salt to learn more about this long tradition in the area.

Culturally, Torrevieja serves as a sort of language divider between the Catalan spoken in the North and the Castellan Spanish spoken in the remainder of Spain. Torrevieja is typically bilingual, with many people speaking both Catalan and Castellan Spanish. Given the large English speaking tourist population, you'll find it an easy place to travel even as a non-Spanish speaker.

Things to do in Torrevieja

Torrevieja is best known by tourists for its lovely beaches. The waters along the Costa Blanca are crystal clear, with long expanses of fine sand beaches. Local coves make ideal swimming spots. The Torrevieja harbour is home to more than 300 fishing boats and many more private sport boats. Boat tours of the Costa Blanca are available for interested visitors. Not only are the clear waters of Torrevieja's beaches available to its visitors, but mud baths in the healing waters of lakes La Mata and Torrevieja are also well renowned, and recommended for treatment of a variety of ailments.

The Torrevieja town square is charming and quaint. If you're in the area around the winter holidays, it is well known for its intricate Nativity display. You might also enjoy a visit to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Torrevieja, dating to 1880. The church is home to some lovely artwork.

Torrevieja Nightlife

Torrevieja is known for its active nightlife with many thriving pubs, bars and nightclubs. You're sure to find evening entertainment options that suit you, whether it's a traditional Spanish evening on the town, a modern nightclub or an English pub. The energetic nighttime scene in Torrevieja has made it a popular destination for younger travelers.

Torrevieja Shopping

While Torrevieja is not home to large department stores, small shops and amazing outdoor markets selling everything from fish to textiles await you on your visit. If you're only planning a short visit, try to be in Torrevieja on a Friday to experience a grand street market. Smaller street markets may be found elsewhere in town on other days.

Torrevieja is also a popular destination for golfers. The town boasts several excellent golf courses. One of Torrevieja's fine courses was home to a stop on the European Tour in 1994. The courses in Torrevieja range from approximately thirty years old to quite new.

Visitors to Torrevieja can choose from a number of hotels or a longer term vacation rental for their stay. The nature of the area does make car travel a convenient option, so you may wish to consider renting a car for some or all of your stay in beautiful Torrevieja. You will find that much of old Torrevieja is accessible on foot, and this can be the best way to explore the harbour, markets and town square.

If you're looking for a wonderful, relaxing, sunny European getaway, consider Torrevieja. Immerse yourself in traditional Spanish culture; enjoy the beautiful beaches, fine dining, and peaceful time on the lovely Costa Blanca of Spain. Whether you're hoping to cruise along the coastline, play a round of golf, or party the night away, you're sure to enjoy your visit to Torrevieja.
